Old Vehicle Registration in Kerala

Kerala as you may be aware was basically formed by the union of the princely states of Travancore, Cochin and Malabar which was under direct British rule.
(Madras Presidency) the whole Travancore state had the registration series TRV till 1950. Then the Kingdom of Cochin used to issue the vehicle registration numbers with prefix 'CS' for 'Cochin state' as  M.S.T.R.= MADRAS STATE TRAVANCORE REGISTRATION for early Travancore region. I am yet to find a vehicle photograph bearing MSTR registration.
Later the Travancore state was merged with Cochin state and the registrations are as follows

TCT - Travancore Cochin Trivandrum
TCQ - Travancore Cochin Quilon
TCK - Travancore Cochin Kottayam
TCR - Travancore Cochin Trissur (no evidence)
Later when the Kerala state was formed on Nov1 the 4 registrations were announced as follows

KLT - Trivandrum
KLQ - Kollam
KLK - Kottayam
KLR - Thrissur

In 1957 4 more districts were created and so 4 new series-KLA(Alappuzha)
KLP(Palakkad),KLD(Kozhikode) and KLC(Kannur)

1958 Ernakulum was created-KLE
1969 -Malappuram-KLM
1972-Idukki-KLI
1980-Wayanad-KLW
1982-Pathanamthitta-KLB
1984-Kasargodu-KLS
The series KLX was given to the KSRTC buses

Each vehicle registration consisted of a combination of 3 alphabet followed by numerically from 1 to 9999. For example, KBT 9999, where 'K' denotes state code for Kerala, 'B' denotes a series fixed by Kerala Motor Vehicle Department (alphabets L, R, E, B, C were used), 'T' denotes district code for Trivandrum. The below listed is the breakup for different RTO s across Kerala.

Thiruvananthapuram - T and V
Kollam -   Q and U
Pathanamthitta -  B
Alappuzha - A and Y
Kottayam - K and O
Idukki - I
Ernakulum - E and F
Thrissur - H and R
Palakkad - P and G
Malappuram - M and L
Kozhikode - Z and D
Wayanad - W

This continued till 1st July 1989 when the alphanumeric registrations came KL-01 to Kl-14 and KL-15 replacing KLX
In 2002 three more series added-KL-16(Attingal),KL-17(moovattupuzha) and KL-18(vadakara)

The puzzle of registrations in India has been difficult; the established fact is that British India had re-registration in 1940, probably after the vehicles act of 1939. Madras and Bombay had new registrations issued. Other states would have followed after they were organized under the union of India. The India Motor Vehicle Act 1988 and its explanatory India Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 were implemented from 1st June 1989 on which date all the old series in existence in all the states and UT ceased and the new 2 Alphabet series started (KL)
